New Delhi, March 25 – The central government has expressed serious concern over the failure of several hospitals to share crucial organ transplant data with the national registry. Officials say this lack of transparency is hindering the effective implementation of organ donation policies and could impact patients in need of life-saving transplants.
According to sources within the Ministry of Health, a significant number of hospitals registered under the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) have not been updating data on organ retrieval and transplantation. This data is essential for maintaining an equitable and transparent system for organ allocation and ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.
“Despite repeated reminders, several hospitals have failed to provide real-time updates on transplant procedures. This is a matter of grave concern as it affects organ distribution efficiency and raises questions about accountability,” said a senior ministry official.
The Centre has now issued fresh directives mandating all hospitals performing organ transplants to submit timely and accurate data. Authorities warn that institutions failing to comply could face penalties, including suspension from the organ transplant program.
Experts stress that data transparency is critical for optimizing organ utilization and preventing unethical practices. “A robust tracking system helps identify gaps, prevent black-market activities, and ensure that organs reach the most deserving patients,” said Dr. Arvind Kumar, a leading transplant surgeon.
